How many “Ghostbusters” movies are there?
There are four major “Ghostbusters” movies out there, released at different times. The first two titles, “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters II” released in 1984 and 1989 respectively, follow the same storyline, while the second two titles, “Ghostbusters” and “Ghostbusters: Afterlife” released between 2016 and 2021, are simply reboots of the original two films, with a completely different storyline, and characters.
The “Ghostbusters” movies in order
Here’s the order in which you should watch the “Ghostbusters” movies.
When three doctors lose their jobs at a university due to their unconventional research into paranormal activities, they decide to go into business for themselves as “Ghostbusters,” offering a unique service to remove ghosts and supernatural entities from haunted locations.
The trio, armed with their proton packs and a converted firehouse as their headquarters, is soon joined by Winston Zeddemore, a pragmatic everyman looking for employment, and together, they form the Ghostbusters team and embark on a quest of chasing ghosts in a city plagued by a surge in paranormal activities while uncovering a malevolent force planning to unleash chaos on New York City.
Set in five years after the events of the first film. The Ghostbusters, Dr. Peter Venkman, Dr. Raymond Stantz, Dr. Egon Spengler, and Winston Zeddemore have disbanded, and a court order has prohibited them from continuing their ghostbusting activities.
But they’re soon pushed into adventure once more when Dana Barrett, one of their former clients experiences a strange occurrence with her baby, Oscar, and seeks their help immediately.
Together, they must investigate a river of pink slime flowing beneath the city, and the connection it has with Vigo the Carpathian, a 16th-century tyrant who plans to return to life by using Oscar as a vessel for his reincarnation.
Serving as a reboot of the original films from the 1980s, the story centers around Erin Gilbert, a former physicist who finds herself entangled in the world of the supernatural after a book she co-wrote on paranormal studies resurfaces. This leads to an unexpected reunion with her estranged friend Abby Yates, who is actively researching ghosts alongside eccentric engineer Jillian Holtzmann.
As the trio investigates a haunted mansion, they encounter their first ghost and capture the evidence on video. Inspired by their findings, the trio decides to form a paranormal investigation and elimination service. They are later joined by Patty Tolan, an MTA worker with knowledge of New York City’s history and an encounter with a subway ghost.
Simultaneously, the city faces an increase in paranormal activity, with ghosts becoming more aggressive. This prompts the Ghostbusters to expand their team, fortuitously adding Patty and creating a quartet of determined, if unconventional, heroes.
Again, serving, serving both as a reboot and sequel to the first “Ghostbuster” film released in 1984, the story begins with single mother Callie Spengler and her two children, Phoebe and Trevor, moving to the small town of Summerville after inheriting a dilapidated farmhouse from their estranged grandfather. Unbeknownst to them, Callie’s father was none other than Egon Spengler, one of the original Ghostbusters.
As Phoebe and Trevor explore their grandfather’s mysterious property, they discover his legacy as a Ghostbuster. Phoebe, a scientifically inclined and curious teenager, stumbles upon Egon’s old equipment and begins to unravel the supernatural secrets hidden within the town.
Phoebe also befriends her summer school teacher, Mr. Grooberson, who has a keen interest in the events of 1984 when the original Ghostbusters saved New York City. Together, they uncover the history of Gozer, the Sumerian god of destruction, and the connection to Egon’s efforts to prevent Gozer’s return.
Strange occurrences begin to unfold in Summerville, including seismic tremors and ghostly phenomena. Phoebe, Trevor, and their new friends Podcast and Lucky realize that they must take up the mantle of Ghostbusters to confront the impending supernatural threat.
And there you have it, folks, the “Ghostbusters” movies in order, and how many “Ghostbusters” movies are there.
